Lewin’s leadership styles

Leadership is a very important factor in any field, be it at your office or at school. A good leader can take the followers to the right path at the same time a bad leader can divert ways. Thus it’s really important to have a good leader whom we can follow.

What is leadership?

Leadership is a procedure by which a man impacts others to achieve a goal and coordinates the association in a manner that makes it more strong and lucid. A leadership style alludes to a pioneer’s trademark practices when coordinating, spurring, controlling, and overseeing gatherings of individuals. Analysts have depicted a wide range of administrative styles. One of the most prominent modules of leadership style was modelled by the great psychologist Kurt Lewin. We will learn about Lewin’s leadership stylesin the following paragraphs. In the year 1939, Kurt Lewin supervised a group of researchers to find out the various styles of leadership. Although a number of administrative styles are recognised today, the model prepared by Kurt Lewin and his team are regarded to be very influential. The team recognised three types of leadership pattern which are authoritarian, democratic and laissez-fair. In order to observe leadership patterns, some children were divided into the three recognised behavioural pattern to work together in arts and crafts project during which the researchers could notice behaviour of each children and their response to different styles of leadership.

Kurt Lewin – Models of Leadership

Authoritarian Leadership (Autocratic)

Authoritarian leaders, also named as autocratic leaders, are very clear to the point of what needs to be done in which way. They can be recognised with their commanding nature and control over their followers. The decision made by authoritarian leaders is not influenced by anyone, neither they take suggestion nor consult with anybody regarding any matter. The main characteristics of this style of leadership are being bossy, dominating and dictatorial. Researchers has pointed out that decision made by authoritarian leaders are often less creative and lacks interest. Authoritarian leadership can be best utilised in situation when a small group needs a decision making body, the part can be played by the resourceful person in the group. It is also worth in moments when a rapid action is required. However, authoritarian leadership have known to give rise to hostile environments when followers deny obeying rules and decision made by the authoritative body.

Participative Leadership (Democratic)

Participative leadership or democratic leadership as we call is regarded as the most effective forms of leadership according to Lewin’s study. They not only provide proper guidance to the group members but also welcome suggestions from them and happily accept their involvement during decision making. Participative leaders as the name suggests encourage team members to participate in various activities, put forward ideas and suggestions, but keep the right to themselves to deliver the final decision. A group like this is more creative and motivated.

Delegative (Laissez-Faire) Leadership

The laissez-fair leadership provides little or no guidance to its members. Members tend to show more demand towards the leader who doesn’t show any exclusive skills that separates him from the common members. A lack of authoritative works great in group where everyone is equally qualified and hence less chances of contradiction. However, it often leads to more disputes when one doesn’t find any conclusion and often the group is left unmotivated.
